Ebonising is Not just a fancy word for staining timber black. It is a permanent, colourfast, chemical reaction, where naturally occurring tannins in the timber are reacted with iron acetate solution- turning the timber black. Part of the magic, is that this reaction can be easily reversed by applying oxalic acid.
