The biggest, craziest, most ambitious project we have ever taken on. A 12m reception counter made from giant beams of Jarrah which were once the old Bunbury jetty. The timber has been sitting in a field for years, slowly degrading. It was laden with hundreds of bridge nails and corroded bolts. All the nail heads had rusted away leaving them fully imbedded in the timber under a layer of tar. It was a monumental effort to remove them before we could even start machining. The timber was full of sand, completely rotten in sections and perfectly preserved in others. We re-imagined and scaled up some old school woodworking techniques, which allowed us to cut perfectly accurate curves on the bandsaw in pieces weighing up to 50KG and 200mm thick. The below counter section is made of 50 individual pieces that block stack into a self supporting form that we have tied together with threaded rod. The finishing process involves scorching, wire brushing, ebonising and waxing, resulting in a beautiful, textured and luminescent finish. A project that has been years in the making. Finally coming to completion. #furnituremakers #scorchedjarrah #jettytimber
