Nathan Day is one of Australia’s most respected furniture designer-makers, with a career spanning nearly three decades. His passion for furniture and design began with a formative apprenticeship in Yallingup in the early 2000s, followed by time in England, where he became the first Australian to train at the prestigious Edward Barnsley Workshop in Hampshire. Immersed in the English Arts and Crafts tradition, Nathan developed a foundation of integrity and technical mastery that remains the cornerstone of his practice today.
The Evolution of the Studio
In 2010, Nathan established Nathan Day Design in the humble setting of his parent’s garage in Yallingup. Today, operating from a purpose-built workshop in Vasse, Western Australia, the studio has evolved into a centre for technical excellence. Nathan and his skilled team operate at the intersection of heritage craft and modern innovation—blending the character of the handmade with digital technology, precision engineering, and advanced timber construction. The workshop has also developed a distinctive material language, reimagining classic timbers like Walnut and Jarrah with unique finishing processes such as traditional ebonising, scorching, and scrubbing.
