Ernest Pendant Light

Bespoke Commission | 2017
A collaboration with Hillam Architects for their Eden Apartment project in Floreat, Western Australia. Hillam brought the concept to us to see if it was possible to make a twisted solid timber pendant light which clients could order when they purchased their apartment. Potentially a high volume piece the production would need to be economical and repeatable. Through a series of experiments we developed a steam bending technique adapted from traditional boat building where planks of wood are steamed in situ using a bag and bent into shape when they became pliable. A challenging project with an incredible, sculptural outcome. And a great example of a minimal, contemporary design achieved through very low-tech material manipulation.
